Safe Load Indicator (SLI )
For Telescopic Cranes
A Safe Load Indicator (SLI) is a vital safety device designed to prevent overloading of lifting equipment, such as cranes, hoists, and forklifts. It plays a critical role in ensuring the safety of personnel, equipment, and the surrounding environment during lifting operations.
Key Components:
Load Sensors: SLIs are equipped with load sensors or load cells that measure the weight of the load being lifted. These sensors provide real-time data to the indicator.
Display Unit: The SLI has a display unit, typically installed in the operator’s cabin, which shows essential information, including the load weight, boom angle, and radius.
Alarm System: The SLI is integrated with an alarm system that triggers audible and visual alerts if the load approaches or exceeds safe working limits. These limits are pre-programmed based on the equipment’s specifications.
Data Logging: Many SLIs also have data logging capabilities, which record historical data related to lifting operations. This data can be useful for post-operation analysis and maintenance purposes.
How Safe Load Indicators Work: When a crane or lifting equipment is in operation, the SLI continuously monitors the load weight, boom angle, and radius. It calculates the load moment, which is a measure of the load’s effect on the crane’s stability. If the load moment approaches or exceeds the safe working limits, the SLI’s alarm system is activated, warning the operator to take corrective action.
Benefits of Safe Load Indicators:
Safety: The primary purpose of an SLI is to ensure the safety of the lifting operation. It helps prevent overloads, which can lead to accidents, equipment damage, and even fatalities.
Compliance: SLIs are often required by regulatory authorities and industry standards. Using an SLI ensures compliance with safety regulations and standards.
Equipment Protection: Overloading can cause significant damage to lifting equipment. SLIs protect the equipment from unnecessary wear and tear.
Productivity: By providing real-time information to the operator, SLIs can help improve lifting efficiency while staying within safe operating limits.
